Quality Over Quantity Is Important When Building Your Following.
Updated: Apr 16, 2019
Building a following can be a little confusing at first. There are tons of spammers out there trying to sell lists. While you may think having a big number of followers will make you look validated, that isn't necessarily true. The internet is getting smarter every day and having a large number of people that have zero interest in your business can actually backfire big time. The truly important thing these days is engagement. An engaged audience that interacts and responds to you, is the best kind of following you can ask for.
Let's put it this way. if you have a million followers with no interest or interaction how does that help you? If you have 3 followers that love you, love your story, and are ready to invest in your books and your journey... well then you are much better off.
It is essential to your success that your readers become invested in you. I always wanted MORE. I felt like no one would take me seriously if I didn't have an amazing website, writing awards, and tons of validation. In all reality it was ME who created that expectation and set that standard.
I want to tell you something that can change everything about your journey, and it can help you to hopefully breathe a sigh of relief. YOU ARE ENOUGH! Even if you are just starting out, OWN THAT. Don't pretend to be someone you aren't. People love to support people they can relate to. Your truth and struggles are what make you someone your audience can relate to. Even if just one person is an avid fan, stay true to you and I promise that number will grow.
The biggest key to success is consistency. Don't let people forget about you. What can you do consistently to keep your followers talking and to keep growing your list? This is where the success and failure of today's authors begins. If you can find a way to consistently reach your audience and keep them engaged, then you will always be growing your following and your success.
The hard truth here, is that this part isn't easy. Once you find what works for you and your journey, then it will get easier. Unfortunately , most authors don't get that far because they don't like to go out of their comfort zone. Online strategy and growing followings, and engaging followings, that is all very far outside of most authors wheelhouse. That is why some authors prefer to use a publisher. If you can master this, then you will be much more successful and profitable as a self published author.
